Welcome to The Misfit Acres! (Who we are and why we chose our name!!)

Salutations and felicitations!

If you know where that's from, you can sit at my table. If you know where it's from and you can guess why I used it, well, you probably know me in real life.

My name is Charlotte Hollea, but I just go by my middle name of Hollea. Ever since I was a young girl the Charlotte's Web references have poured in. Comes with the territory of Charlotte, why not embrace it!

Right!?!

Well, now that we're past my always awkward small talk, we can talk about the most important part of my homesteading journey. Aside from the kids of course.

I co-own and run our small little farm in West Central Missouri called The Misfit Acres. And like the name suggests, we really are just a gaggle of misfits out here. What started as a once horse trail riding campground has slowly been evolving into my version of paradise. We collect the animals that no one else wants. The older ones, the "funny" looking ones, the not as common ones... anything that needs a home, usually finds it way here.

When I first moved out here this past January, the owner had four horses and a mule. Since becoming a permanent resident myself, we have brought in (and some have left) five dogs, 2 rabbits that have grown to be 33 and then a loss of 9, a hinney, a heifer that was once a wild heifer on the neighbors farm, and a bull calf that was traded for a dog. My plans include increasing my cattle by about two more heifers, adding about 10 guinea fowl next spring, and hopefully increasing my rabbits to full production of 10 producing does and two bucks.

Hence the name Misfit Acres, we really are just this hobble along, random, misfit and lost souls farm. We live by the chickens (that we don't have), I live here with my best friend P, and we raise two wild feral children N and R. It was his farm and he opened it up to my kids and myself to build our dream life.

Thanks for checking out our little journey, stay tuned for the exciting misadventures on the Misfit Acres!

Two Licks Update: One Week on the Farm

It has been one week since we brought Two Licks (The Heifer) too the farm. She is set to eventually become my second breeder in my very small cattle operation. Here's Two Licks when we brought her home. Two Licks Homecoming 11.29.18 As you can tell, she wasn't doing the greatest in her previous home. She was fighting with several other cows to get adequate grain, fresh water, and shelter was scarce. The great thing is, this has made Two Licks quite the fighter. She is very strong and adept. Her back feet are quick and hard. Just before this photograph was taken, I was bruising her with a curry comb through the front of the trailer and she decided to kick the trailer wall. It gave me quite a shock! Since she has come to our home, we haven't made any drastic changes or given any major medications. The changes we have made, in order, are: Fresh Water (And lots of it!) Clean Hay Oats and All Stock Sweet Feed (We love Orscheln's for all of our grain ...
